Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the levels of stress, depression and self-integrity among rural elderly women, and identify the associating factors on their self-integrity.

Method: A total of 94 elderly women aged over 65 years were recruited from rural areas in Jeonnam province, Korea. A structured interview was completed by research assistants using questionnaires. Data were collected from October to November, 2006 and were analyzed using SPSS v10.0.

Result: Subjects who were younger(F=3.6, P<.05), had higher education(F=4.5, P<.01), lived with family or spouse(F=6.6, P<.001), stayed at their home(T=5.2, P<.001), and perceived good health(F=3.3, P<.05) were more likely to have higher level of self-integrity. The level of selfintegrity was significantly negatively correlated with stress(r=-.334, p=.000) and depression (r=-.2.72, p=.000) respectively. Simple stepwise regression analysis showed that having more stress (33%), being more depressed (18%), living with husband and their children (8%), and staying at home (4%) were significantly associated with greater self-integrity, and accounted for 63% of the variance in overall self-integrity.

Conclusion: These results suggest that community-based nursing interventions are needed for rural elderly women to decrease their stress and depression for enhancing their self-integrity and quality of life. In addition, Comparison studies on related factors of self-integrity between male and female elders would be interest.
